Single App Mode allows an iOS app to retain control over the device and prevent interaction with other apps or functions. This can be very helpful for:
- Preventing students from searching for answers during a test*
- Preventing the accidental closure of an app
- Setting up a kiosk where access to other apps/menu is not allowed

Configuring iOS Autonomous Single App Mode. Autonomous single app mode is a feature present in iOS 7.0 and above. The app which is configured as ASAM app will enter the kiosk/single app mode once logged in to and will exit the single app mode once the user finishes working with that app. Autonomous Single App Mode payload settings. Systems Manager offers two options for supervised devices related to Single App Mode, located under Systems Manager > Settings > Single App Mode (Kiosk). Forcing an app into Single App Mode, and controlling which apps are able to place themselves into Single App Mode. Both options will be discussed below.

Forcing an App into Single App Mode
Particularly useful for kiosks, or devices that should only ever be used with a single app, the Single App Mode restrictions allows one app to be forced into Single App Mode. As long as this restriction is in place, the device will only allow this app to run, and will auto-launch it when not running. To enable:
- Navigate to Systems Manager > Settings > Single App Mode (Kiosk)
- From the dropdown, choose the app to place in Single App Mode. Only built-in apps and managed apps (listed under MDM > Apps) will appear in the list.
- Click Save Changes.
Once applied to devices in question, the app will be automatically launched and locked in Single App Mode until the restriction is removed.
Limiting Autonomous Access to Single App Mode
Some apps can place themselves in Single App Mode, such as testing apps which prevents access to outside information. The Allowed Single App Mode restrictions controls which apps are able to perform this action. It does not limit which apps can be placed in Single App Mode manually by the user with Guided Access. To enable:
- Navigate to Systems Manager > Settings > Restrictions > iOS restrictions (supervised).
- Click in the box next to Allowed Single App Mode.
- Select any apps from the list to be allowed. Only built-in apps and managed apps (listed under MDM > Apps) will appear in the list.
- Click Save Changes.
With Assessment Mode, assessment apps can disable certain hardware and software features to meet the requirements for a secure test environment, and prevent a test taker from using other apps and invalidating test results.
Use an app with Assessment Mode built in
Securing iPad or Mac for testing with a supported app requires no additional setup or management, such as Mobile Device Management (MDM). Apps with Assessment Mode lock iPad or Mac into the single app automatically, which means that while Assessment Mode is active, users can't switch to another app.
Check with your assessment provider to make sure that their app uses Assessment Mode.

Autonomous Single App Mode Macos Update
If you turn on Single App Mode or Guided Access in iOS, that feature supersedes Assessment Mode restrictions.

Assessment Mode is supported on macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later. When Assessment Mode is active on macOS, these features are disabled:

Autocorrect and spell check aren't restricted on macOS automatically. They can be controlled through restrictive attributes on web content.

If your app doesn't support Assessment Mode, or you use an app for diagnostic, classroom, or formative assessment purposes, you can use MDM software to set up your iPad for Single App Mode. Your MDM software installs a profile that identifies the selected app and forces it to open on the device, preventing students from using other apps. In the profile, you can specify additional features that you don't want students to use.
